Gov. Okpebholo mourns Archbishop Akubeze, Donates Two Coaster Buses To Catholic Archdiocese
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has paid tribute to the late Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, describing his death as a painful loss to Edo State, the Catholic Church and humanity.

At the funeral service held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Benin City, the Governor recalled his last meeting with Archbishop Akubeze, saying the late cleric prayed for him and encouraged him shortly before his death.

Governor Okpebholo also revealed that his administration had approved two Toyota Coaster buses requested by the late Archbishop to support transportation within the Archdiocese.

Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, urged Nigerians to reject religious and ethnic divisions and embrace love, unity and peaceful coexistence.

Archbishop Akubeze died on July 9, 2026, at the age of 69. He served as Archbishop of Benin City from 2011 and was President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria from 2018 to 2022.

May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
