Rev. Fr. Daniel Ebvotokhai of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi has revealed that when a bishop or archbishop dies, the entire diocese or archdiocese experiences grief, prayer and transition. However, this is what follows:
1. The Diocese becomes vacant: The seat is vacant, in Latin it is "Sede Vacante". Vacant but not open to application. The Diocese is officially without a shepherd. However, day-to-day activities continue, but no major decisions are made.
2. Diocesan Administrator: Within 8 days, the priests of the Diocese elect an Administrator to oversee things until a new Bishop is appointed. Or A Bishop is assigned to the diocese as an administrator. He keeps the Diocese running, he can carry out ordination, but cannot make certain permanent changes.
3. Funeral & Burial: The Bishop is laid to rest with a Funeral Mass, usually in his Cathedral. The place where a Bishop is buried inside the cathedral is usually called the Crypt. Many Bishops, popes and saints are buried there.
4. The Search for a New Bishop: The Apostolic Nuncio consults, sends names to Rome, and the Holy Father appoints the new Bishop. This process takes time, prayer and discernment. At this point, Christ faithful (priests religious and lay) are invited to pray, not guessing or speculating. If its an Archdiocese, a Bishop is appointed as an Archbishop.
Let us now pray for all our Bishops, living or deceased, that the Lord will give them eternal rest, and raise up holy shepherds to rule His people.
