Tenerife Striker Jesus de Miguel Dies At 30 After On-Pitch Collision
CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering serious injuries in a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish Segunda Division match.
The tragic incident occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time during Monday's 2-2 encounter at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez Stadium.
Owono had rushed out to clear a long ball when his knee collided with De Miguel, leaving the striker motionless on the pitch.
Medical personnel immediately attended to the forward before he was taken to hospital by ambulance. The referee sent off Owono with a straight red card before abandoning the match as players from both teams struggled to contain their emotions.
Although De Miguel's condition was initially described as stable but serious, Spanish media reported that he suffered cardiac arrest inside the ambulance and was resuscitated on the way to hospital.
His condition reportedly deteriorated on Tuesday morning, and he was pronounced dead at 7:00 GMT.
Tenerife confirmed his death in an emotional statement, expressing profound sadness and extending condolences to his family, friends, teammates and supporters.
FC Andorra also paid tribute, while former Barcelona defender and Andorra co-owner Gerard Pique expressed his condolences.
La Liga president Javier Tebas and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe were among prominent football figures who mourned the striker. Real Madrid players also observed a minute's silence before Tuesday's training session.
Following the tragedy, the Spanish Football Federation postponed Tuesday's Copa del Rey fixtures, including two men's first-round matches and a women's Copa de la Reina encounter.
Born in Madrid, De Miguel began his senior career at Leganes in 2015 before featuring for several Spanish clubs, including Lugo, Fuenlabrada, Union Adarve, Navalcarnero and Unionistas.
He joined CD Castellon in 2023, scoring 16 goals to help the club secure promotion to the second division before moving to Tenerife on a three-year contract in 2025.
He scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for Tenerife.
The striker is survived by his daughter, Carla, who was born in 2025.
