Queiroz Breaks Silence After Ghana Exit, Urges Support For Black Stars
Carlos Queiroz has broken his silence following his departure as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, describing his exit as a difficult decision while urging supporters to continue backing the Black Stars.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed on Thursday that it had mutually agreed with the Portuguese coach to terminate his contract following discussions conducted in a spirit of mutual respect.
Queiroz’s departure came just two days after Ghana suffered a stunning 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Black Stars surrendered a two-goal lead at the Accra Sports Stadium to suffer their second consecutive defeat in Group C, having earlier lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire.
The 73-year-old coach, who was reappointed on September 2 after guiding Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitted that ending his second spell with the team was not an easy decision.
“Following discussions held in a spirit of mutual respect, the Ghana Football Association and I have mutually agreed to terminate the Service Agreement governing my role as Head Coach of the Ghana National Team, the Black Stars,” Queiroz said in a farewell statement published by the GFA.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else.”
Queiroz thanked the GFA and its president for giving him the opportunity to lead the national team, while expressing regret that the desired conditions for his project were not fully established.
“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent.
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established; this, together with our recent performances, brought us to the decision to end this journey. I leave with respect, gratitude and pride.”
The former Manchester United assistant also paid tribute to the players, urging Ghanaians not to lose faith in the current generation.
“Above all, I pay tribute to the players of the Black Stars. Thank you to all of them who represented Ghana with courage, commitment and pride.
“You fought for your country and carried the hopes of millions. Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them.”
Queiroz insisted that Ghana still possesses considerable talent and potential, adding that unity and the right environment could help the team achieve success.
He also thanked the Ghanaian public for their support and said he would continue to hold the country in high regard.
Queiroz leaves the Black Stars with one win, two draws and four defeats from seven matches.
The GFA is expected to appoint an interim coach ahead of Ghana’s back-to-back 2027 AFCON qualifying fixtures against Somalia in November.
