Playing at Real Madrid ‘not for everyone’ – Bernardo Silva
Real Madrid midfielder Bernardo Silva has described playing for the Spanish giants as a privilege that “is not for everyone” after completing his move from Manchester City.
The 31-year-old Portugal international was officially presented by the 15-time European champions on Wednesday following the expiration of his contract with Manchester City.
Silva said the sight of Real Madrid’s record 15 Champions League trophies at the Santiago Bernabéu reinforced the magnitude of the club he has joined.
“Playing for a club that has 15 Champions League titles is not for everyone, so I’m very proud, and now I’ll give everything for this club,” Silva said in an interview with Real Madrid TV.
The midfielder, who has previously played several times at the Bernabéu during his Manchester City career, said representing Real Madrid carries a special responsibility.
“I’ve already played quite a few times at the Bernabeu — when you arrive and see the 15 Champions League titles they display there, it’s very imposing, and having them here is very special,” he added.
Silva’s move comes after a successful spell at Manchester City, where he won multiple domestic and European honours.
His former City teammate Rodri, meanwhile, completed a move to Barcelona on Tuesday after being linked with Real Madrid earlier in the summer.
New Real Madrid coach José Mourinho revealed that he had spoken with Rodri during the transfer window and that the midfielder had reservations about joining the club.
“I spoke with him a couple of times, and Real Madrid made him a very good offer,” Mourinho told Spanish television programme El Chiringuito.
“Rodri had doubts… and the doubts of Rodri created doubts for me.
“He’s an extraordinary player and was very professional with us; nothing negative to say. But Real Madrid is a club of a stature that can’t have players who think twice about it.”
