OPay Raises Alarm, Recruits DSS, Police To Hunt Shutdown Rumour Peddlers
OPay has raised the alarm over a viral shutdown rumour, engaging the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to track down those behind the false information.
The fintech company said it had provided evidence to the security agencies to help identify the individuals responsible for creating and circulating the message claiming that OPay would shut down its Nigerian operations.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference organised by the company.
Rokosu said the company would pursue the matter through legal channels, warning those responsible for spreading the falsehood that they would face the full consequences of the law.
“Anyone who deliberately engages in similar conduct should expect decisive legal action,” he said.
Meanwhile, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, moved to reassure millions of customers that the company remains fully operational in Nigeria.
Adekunle described the viral notice as completely false, stressing that it did not originate from OPay.
He said the fraudulent message claimed that OPay would cease operations on September 1, 2026, even though the company remained fully operational as of Wednesday, September 2.
The rumour had urged customers to withdraw their funds to avoid losing access to their accounts, triggering concerns among users of the fintech platform.
Adekunle warned customers against acting on unverified information circulating on social media and messaging platforms.
He said fraudsters could make fake communications appear authentic by using copied company logos, official-looking documents and other deceptive features.
OPay had earlier dismissed the shutdown notice and urged customers to rely only on its verified communication channels for accurate information about its operations.
The company has now vowed to work with the security agencies to uncover the source of the rumour and bring those responsible to justice.
