Man United Consider Fine for Martínez After Explosive Attack on Club Chiefs
Manchester United are considering disciplinary action against defender Lisandro Martínez after the Argentine publicly criticised the club’s hierarchy following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.
Martínez expressed frustration over United’s summer transfer recruitment, insisting that the club’s leadership must take responsibility for the team’s struggles rather than placing the blame solely on the manager and players.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the defeat, the Argentine international called for greater investment and questioned technical director Jason Wilcox over the club’s transfer strategy.
“We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well,” Martínez said.
“I expect more investment. 100 per cent. I expect more from our technical director. Tonight it is easy to blame the coach, easy to say the players, but also we have to see other areas. You can’t keep changing, changing, changing the manager. What about other areas?”
The defender later doubled down on his remarks in a second interview, declaring that he would not “close my mouth” and insisting that United needed to demonstrate greater ambition.
According to reports by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, the club considers a fine for Martínez increasingly likely, although the defender is reportedly not the only member of the dressing room concerned about United’s recruitment and overall direction.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also reported on Wednesday that United were assessing a possible sanction against the 28-year-old following his outspoken comments.
Martínez’s contract runs until June 2027, with United holding an option to extend it by another year. However, the prospect of him signing a longer-term deal is reportedly becoming increasingly remote.
The controversy comes at a delicate time for United, who must now turn their attention to Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leeds United.
