Koeman Mourns Wife Bartina After Long Cancer Battle
Former Netherlands and Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is mourning the death of his wife, Bartina, who passed away at the age of 65 following a long battle with cancer.
Koeman announced the heartbreaking news on Wednesday, revealing that Bartina died on September 15, 2026.
In a statement shared by the family, Koeman described his late wife as a beloved mother and grandmother.
“With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mom and grandma,” he said.
“Bartina Koeman – Boddeveld. 30 January 1961 – 15 September 2026.”
Bartina was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Although she initially recovered, the disease later returned. In 2018, doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to her spine, while she revealed in 2024 that she was once again receiving treatment after the disease became active.
Despite her illness, Bartina continued to support her husband’s managerial career, including during the Netherlands’ participation at Euro 2024.
Tributes have since poured in from across the football world.
Barcelona, where Koeman enjoyed a distinguished playing career and later managed the club, expressed its condolences to the former manager and his family.
“FC Barcelona and its supporters send their deepest condolences and affection to Ronald Koeman and his family for the passing of his wife, Bartina Koeman. May she rest in peace,” the club said.
The Netherlands national team also paid tribute, offering its support to Koeman, his children and wider family.
Koeman and Bartina were married for several decades and had three children together — sons Tim and Ronald Jr and daughter Debbie.
Bartina had previously spoken publicly about her cancer journey, saying she hoped sharing her experience would encourage and support other women facing similar challenges.
Her death comes as Koeman continues his career in football management, having served as Netherlands head coach on two separate occasions and previously managed Barcelona.
