Kingibe Fires Back At Wike: I Won’t Be Intimidated
Senator Ireti Kingibe has responded to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s criticism of her position on the Federal Capital Territory’s loan approvals, declaring that she would not be intimidated in the discharge of her duties.
Kingibe said she entered public service to represent and serve the people of the Federal Capital Territory, insisting that she would continue to question government borrowing, spending and other issues affecting the territory.
The senator made the remarks in a post on her verified X handle on Thursday, September 24, 2026, following comments by Wike during an inspection of ongoing road projects in Abuja.
Wike had dismissed Kingibe’s concerns over the FCT loan, arguing that the administration could not obtain a loan without the approval of the National Assembly.
He also questioned Kingibe’s chances of returning to the Senate in 2027, saying the people of the FCT had already made their choice and would support President Bola Tinubu and former FCT Senator Philip Aduda.
But Kingibe challenged the minister to produce the Senate Votes and Proceedings showing when the alleged approval for the loan was granted.
“I dare the FCT Minister to show the people of the FCT, and all who have asked, the Votes and Proceedings of the day the approval was given. I cannot speak for the House of Representatives, but I know that it was never brought before the Senate,” she said.
Kingibe further pointed to previous instances in which President Tinubu sought Senate approval for loans, stressing the importance of accountability in public office.
She also rejected the suggestion that any individual could determine who would represent the FCT in the Senate after the 2027 election, maintaining that the decision rests with the electorate.
The senator said she would continue to scrutinise government activities and speak out on matters affecting the FCT whenever necessary.
“I did not enter public service to be intimidated. I entered it to serve. The will of the people of the FCT will prevail on the day of the election,” Kingibe said.
