Full List: 37 Miners Who Died In NSCDC Custody Identified
Thirty-seven suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State have been identified.
The victims were among scores of suspected illegal miners arrested during operations conducted on September 15 and 16 around the Lt Gen Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna, the Niger State capital.
The NSCDC commandant in the state at the time, Suberu Aniviye, had said that several detainees were found dead in the early hours of Thursday following a suspected outbreak of disease.
Following the deaths, the federal government suspended the Niger State NSCDC commandant and ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) said it had compiled a list of the 37 deceased persons.
Awaisu Giwa, an international peace ambassador with the IHRC, said the commission obtained the initial list from records at the General Hospital, Minna.
According to Giwa, the list was prepared by a mortuary attendant on the instruction of the hospital's Chief Medical Director (CMD).
He added that four additional names were subsequently provided after relatives reported that their family members, who had been missing, were among those who died.
Giwa said the commission intended to obtain an official copy of the list from the hospital and use the records to assist affected families in seeking compensation.
The 37 victims identified are:
