Eriksen Ends Wolfsburg Contract Three Months After On-Pitch Collapse
Christian Eriksen has left VfL Wolfsburg after the German club agreed to terminate the midfielder’s contract by mutual consent, three months after he collapsed while representing Denmark.
Wolfsburg confirmed the departure on Tuesday, with Eriksen choosing to return closer to his family in Denmark.
The 34-year-old has not featured since the incident and has missed the opening six matches of Wolfsburg’s 2.Bundesliga campaign.
“Right now, it’s important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” Eriksen said.
“I’m happy that we were able to find a solution together. My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows.
“I know that the club is now in good hands to make the journey back to the Bundesliga, and I’m convinced that VfL has a successful future ahead of it.
“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure to play for you, and I will fondly remember this time.”
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg in September 2025 after leaving Manchester United, signing an initial two-year contract.
He made 34 appearances in his first season, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists, but could not prevent Wolfsburg from suffering relegation from the Bundesliga.
Wolfsburg lost to Paderborn in the promotion/relegation play-off, bringing an end to their 29-year spell in Germany’s top flight.
Despite his departure, Eriksen has not announced his retirement from professional football.
Wolfsburg had previously said the Denmark international was on a pathway towards returning to action following his collapse in June.
The incident was the second time Eriksen had suffered a collapse while playing for Denmark.
He previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 clash with Finland in 2021. He was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) before returning to professional football with Brentford in January 2022.
The ICD was reported to have intervened during his latest collapse, helping restore his heart rhythm.
After receiving treatment on the pitch, Eriksen was able to walk off the field.
For now, his next step in football remains uncertain as he returns to Denmark to be closer to his family.
