Eguavoen Targets Double As Super Falcons Face Comoros In Olympic Qualifier
Super Falcons interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has challenged his players to complete a double over Comoros when both teams clash in the second leg of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying tie on Tuesday.
Nigeria secured a 2-0 victory in the first leg last Saturday and will host the return fixture at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, Ogun State, seeking another win to strengthen their qualification hopes.
“We are enjoying a two-goal advantage, but we will try as much as possible to see how we can wrap it up by winning tomorrow’s game. Maybe one, maybe two, maybe three,” Eguavoen said at a press conference.
The former Super Eagles coach, however, stressed that his priority was not just scoring goals but ensuring the team maintained its tactical discipline.
“I’m interested in goals, but the structure of the team is what I’m really interested in. The bottom line is to win, and we will try to do that,” he added.
Eguavoen Hints At Squad Rotation
Eguavoen also revealed plans to make changes to the team, giving more players an opportunity to impress as the technical crew continues to build a deeper squad.
According to him, 27 of the 28 invited players are in camp, including about 14 first-time invitees.
“We’re trying to have a very big pool, so that when the games become tougher, we have maybe 40 players to draw from,” he said.
The coach expressed satisfaction with the players’ performances in training and singled out Joy Igbokwe for particular praise, while hinting that other squad members could feature in the return leg.
“Performance-wise, the players have been very good. It’s a good challenge for the coach when you have players in abundance and everyone is ready to play,” Eguavoen stated.
Nigeria will aim to build on their first-leg advantage and take another step towards securing a place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
