Edo Varsity Lecturer Dies After Hotel Encounter With Sex Worker
A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly slumping in a hotel room following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, before he reportedly became unconscious and died.
The development was confirmed on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, who said three persons had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Ikoedem said the command received a report at about 8pm on October 5 that the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.
She explained that Uwuigbe subsequently asked the woman to buy water for him, but upon her return, she found him lying lifeless in the room.
“The hotel owner, the manager and the sex worker are currently in custody while investigation continues,” the police spokesperson said.
She added that the lecturer’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff of the institution but stressed that the incident happened outside the university campus.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
The police said investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death is ongoing.
