Edo Prison Escape: Warden Blamed Manpower Shortage For Suspect’s Flight
An official of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has blamed manpower shortages for the escape of a suspect, Osita, who fled while appearing in court for trial over alleged conspiracy and stealing.

The official explained that the correctional officer who escorted Osita and other inmates to court could not pursue him without risking the escape of the remaining inmates in his custody.

“The warden couldn’t leave other inmates to pursue Osita, as he would risk losing others. The dearth of manpower should be addressed now so that this kind of incident does not happen again,” the official said.

The official further disclosed that more than 1,000 personnel of the NCoS were expected to retire this year, alleging that there were no plans to recruit replacements.

In a statement, the Edo State Command of the NCoS appealed to members of the public to provide information that could lead to the fugitive’s recapture.

The command urged anyone with useful information about Osita’s whereabouts to contact the nearest correctional centre or police station, or call 08038075882 or 08039243704.

The Controller of Corrections in Edo State assured the public that efforts were ongoing to recapture the escapee, adding that security had been strengthened across custodial facilities to prevent further incidents.
