Arsenal made a powerful statement ahead of the new Premier League season, sweeping aside Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday.
The champions needed only 24 seconds to take the lead, with Riccardo Calafiori finishing calmly after a clever pass from Myles Lewis-Skelly exposed the City defence.
Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 27th minute. Martin Odegaard delivered a dangerous cross to the far post, where new signing Christos Tzolis headed the ball back across goal for Kai Havertz to nod home.
City struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity, with new signing Elliot Anderson unable to influence proceedings and Erling Haaland missing two first-half opportunities.
Odegaard then completed the rout three minutes after the restart. Tzolis slipped a pass into the Arsenal captain’s path, and the Norwegian midfielder weaved through the City defence before finishing at close range.
The victory offered further encouragement to Mikel Arteta, whose side are preparing to defend their Premier League crown.
Arsenal’s new recruits also impressed, with £75m signing Bruno Guimaraes settling comfortably into midfield while Tzolis contributed two assists in an outstanding debut.
