2027 HoR: Akoko-Edo Residents Vow To Disappoint Bankole-Balogun, Question His Electoral Strength
…Say candidate who could not secure his polling unit can not be trusted to win Akoko-Edo
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, political temperature appears to be rising in Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency, as some residents have expressed reservations over the emergence and political ambitions of Oladele Bankole-Balogun, insisting that his electoral strength remains a major question that must be answered before the contest.
The concerned residents, who spoke against the backdrop of the unfolding political realignment in the constituency, argued that any aspirant seeking to represent Akoko-Edo in the House of Representatives must first demonstrate substantial grassroots acceptance and the capacity to command votes at the polling-unit level.
According to them, Bankole-Balogun's alleged inability to secure victory at his own polling unit in previous political contests raises serious questions about his capacity to mobilise the electorate across the expansive federal constituency.
They maintained that the 2027 contest would not be determined by political visibility, media appearances or the strength of campaign rhetoric, but by genuine acceptance among voters across the various wards and communities that make up Akoko-Edo.
“Akoko-Edo is not a constituency that can be won through noise or political packaging. The people know those who have stood with them and those who have genuinely built relationships at the grassroots,” one of the residents was quoted as saying.
Another resident reportedly argued that the ability to win one's immediate political environment should be regarded as an important indicator of broader electoral viability.
“If someone can not convince voters in his own polling unit, how does he intend to convince the thousands of voters across Akoko-Edo? The 2027 election will answer that question,” the resident said.
The residents further declared that they would resist what they described as an attempt to impose candidates on the constituency, stressing that voters have become increasingly conscious of their political choices and would ultimately determine who receives their mandate.
They also called on political actors preparing for the 2027 election to concentrate on issues affecting the people, including roads, employment, education, healthcare, security, agricultural development and economic opportunities for young people.
With the 2027 House of Representatives contest gradually attracting greater attention, political observers believe the battle for Akoko-Edo could become increasingly competitive as aspirants intensify their consultations and grassroots mobilisation.
