2027: Donald Duke’s Presidential Bid Draws International Attention
Former Cross River State governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has attracted international attention ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

An international publication, Global Hukum Indonesia, described Duke as one of the Nigerian politicians who has remained prominent in the country’s presidential politics over the past two decades.

The publication also claimed that political and economic observers outside Nigeria were monitoring Duke’s activities as preparations for the 2027 election gather momentum.

Duke was among the first set of governors elected after Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999. He served as governor of Cross River State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He later contested the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
In its assessment of Duke’s political agenda, the publication highlighted proposed reforms covering governance, the economy, education and the use of artificial intelligence in public administration.

On governance, it said Duke’s proposed programme included structural reforms designed to promote transparency and address corruption within government institutions.

According to the publication, the proposed reforms would also seek to improve investor confidence, reduce poverty and strengthen public welfare.
Education was another major component of the agenda highlighted in the report, with Duke reportedly proposing reforms to modernise Nigeria’s basic and tertiary education sectors.

The programme, it said, would focus on expanding access to quality education while equipping young Nigerians with skills and opportunities to compete in the global economy.

The publication also drew attention to Duke’s proposed national Artificial Intelligence strategy, which would seek to incorporate AI tools into public administration to improve government operations and service delivery.

It said the proposed strategy would extend beyond government, with AI and other digital technologies earmarked for sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing and financial technology.

The plan also reportedly includes a nationwide digital literacy programme and the deployment of modern technologies in healthcare, public infrastructure and public safety.

The publication portrayed Duke’s proposed political and economic agenda as an attempt to combine technological development with institutional reforms aimed at addressing Nigeria’s domestic challenges.

However, some of the publication’s claims and assessments could not be independently verified, including its description of Duke as one of Nigeria’s promising presidential candidates and its assertion that media organisations across the United States, Europe and Asia are monitoring his political activities.

The 2027 presidential race is expected to intensify as political parties and prospective candidates position themselves ahead of the election.
